ANDREA MODA
In 1992, Italian shoe manufacturer Andrea Sassetti achieved a lifelong ambition by creating a racing team to enter the Formula One championships. ‘Andrea Moda Formula’ entered a two car team and ‘arrived’ at 12 events during the year. Debuting at the South African Grand Prix the team was excluded for not paying the entry fee for new teams. The season did not get any better and after a series of calamities they were unceremoniously suspended from Formula One for bringing the sport into disrepute.

Many now nominate Andrea Moda Formula as the worst team in Grand Prix history. In a 1992 season dominated to the point of boredom by Williams, the wacky goings-on at the other end of the pit lane often provided a macabre sort of amusement for those willing to be charitable. Those who weren't were left shaking their heads, wondering if this could honestly be a serious professional racing outfit.

Perry’s personality and absolute refusal to concede defeat made him popular with the press. A genius behind the wheel; The Telegraph headlined him as ‘a new cult hero’ The Times called him ‘the world’s unluckiest racing driver’

In the 12 events they entered the two cars were ‘Excluded’ 3 times, ‘Did Not Pre-Qualify’ 11 times, ‘Did Not Qualify’ 3 times, ‘Withdrew’ 5 times and was ‘Disqualified’ once. The only race they did manage to qualify for was the Monaco Grand Prix - Car 1 driven by Roberto Moreno. Unfortunately Moreno retired on lap 11 while running last.

During 1992 a suspected case of arson destroyed Sassetti's discothèque on the east coast of Italy, and as he fled from the flames, a gunman shot at him, but missed.

PERRY McCARTHY
Perry McCarthy decided at the age of 18 that he wanted to reach the top in the world's most expensive sport. With no racing experience, no cash, and little going for him except a passion for speed, the exuberant Cockney shouldn't have stood a chance. Born in Stepney East in London, McCarthy 'Pel' is a perfect example of a battler who never got the recognition he deserved.

Perry's break into F1 did not come until the eve of the 1992 Formula One season, when he was signed by the Andrea Moda team. McCarthy, frequently denied more than a handful of laps in which to prepare, failed to qualify for any Grand Prix. His Grand Prix debut at Spain lasted eighteen meters down pit lane in prequalifying. The team folded before the end of the season in controversial circumstances and McCarthy was left without a drive.

His book, Flat Out, Flat Broke: Formula One the Hard Way! must be the funniest, as well as the most insightful, yet written about life as a modern professional racing driver.

Perry literally clawed his way to the top with very little backing but, with talent, dedication, determination and that famous sense of humour he always acheived his ambitions.

Perry McCarthy was the original Black STIG on BBC's Top Gear. He appeared in 22 episodes before killing off the character by driving off HMS Invincible at 109mph The Original Stig from Top Gear

After numerous requests, we've decided to release the Andrea Moda F1 Shirt, complete with the winning tagline of our recent competition.

BACK OF THE SHIRT
Because team owner Sassetti never really wanted McCarthy to drive he would often restrict his practise to a hand full of laps. Perry never really had a shot – and made his own T-shirts to say so. “Let Pel Out” was a phrase often used in the paddock.
