The Lotus 49 was introduced in 1967 and is probably the most iconic Grand Prix cars in Formula 1 history. Through designer Maurice Phillippe, Chapman’s innovation of bolting the engine directly to the tub was realised. Chassis design rarely remains at the top of the tree for more than a season or two. The 49 was the exception.

It made its racing debut at Zandvoort on 4th June, and went on to be the mainstay of Team Lotus’ activities until 1970. During its debut season, Jim Clark and Graham Hill drove Lotus 49’s in nine Grand Prix, one or other of them starting from pole on every single occasion. The destinctive Gold Leaf sponsored 49, carried Graham Hill to his second World Championship title in 1968.
